The Telemark Art Museum and the World Heritage Center shows art exhibitions and industrial history in a beautiful industrial hall from the early 20th century. The World Heritage Center tells the story of the most important Norwegian invention; the production of mineral fertilizer. A industrial history that is on the UNESCO world heritage list.
For more than 100 years ago Notodden was venue for a modern fairy tale. In 1905, the world’s first industrial production of mineral fertilizer – with air as raw material – started here. It happened at a time when the world needed more food and farmers needed more fertilizer to increase crop yields. A visit in the World Heritage Center will make you better acquainted with the events that put Notodden and Rjukan at UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
The gallery has exhibitions of national and international art. The Art collection includes art from the golden age in Telemark, with artists like Christian Skredsvig and Theodor Kittelsen. The Terje Bergstad collection is an important part of the museum.
