The stretch Bandak to Norsjø canal was finished in 1892 - where 500 men worked for five years to build this impressive construction. Along the 17 kilometer long stretch between Ulefoss and Strengen, 14 locks are found with a total height difference of 57 meters. Out of all the locks Vrangfoss lock is the most impressive and largest. The locks operate in the same way today as when it was built.
Ulefoss
When approaching Ulefoss from the south be careful and watch out. Stay to starboard and outside the island of Torva. Between the island and the mainland it is shallow. You can find guest places at Ulefoss guest harbor. Sailboats should be at the outer pier to ensure enough depth. Diesel and gas station are located on the harbor.
Eidsfoss, Vrangfoss and Lunde locks
Just after Ulefoss you come to the entrance of Eidsfoss locks. There are two lock chambers, and the lift height is 10 meters. In Eidsfoss you can still see resemblance to when it was built. The locks are carved into the mountain. The lock house has its own breadmaking house and is idyllically situated overlooking the locks next to it is the pond with the power plant.
Kjeldal and Hogga locks, Strengen to Flåvatn
The trip continues to Kjeldal as the next lock. At this lock facility there is a lock guard house and a forge building. Also note the old “needle house” at the northern pond. Here the closure material, the “needles”, was stored for use in the old needle pond.
